U.S. Food and Drug Administration

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. U.S. Food and Drug Administration. 2008. 15 May 2008 http://www.fda.gov/.

The Food and Drug Administration is an important component in the fertility and reproduction issue. All the fertility drugs as well as birth control and emergency-contraception must be approved by the FDA. They have come under fire in the past for approving RU-486, a series of pills that induces an abortion, and the delay of a decision on over-the-counter birth control. Their decisions affect almost all aspects of reproduction, even down to pre-natal vitamins. Although it is thought of as being exempt from politics, there is still evidence of political persuasion and influence in its decisions.
