The Food and Drug Administration is an important component in the fertility and reproduction issue. All the fertility drugs as well as birth control and emergency-contraception must be approved by the FDA. They have come under fire in the past for approving RU-486, a series of pills that induces an abortion, and the delay of a decision on over-the-counter birth control. Their decisions affect almost all aspects of reproduction, even down to pre-natal vitamins. Although it is thought of as being exempt from politics, there is still evidence of political persuasion and influence in its decisions.

Also, because it gives two sides, it is a a mostly unbiased source. The book is easy to follow and well written. The importance of how religion affects sexuality in America is great and should not be overlooked when researching abortion and sexuality.

This is an ebook that provides a quick, state-by-state guide to laws in the United States. It compares how they are different and similar and what governs their legislation. This book has a large section on family law and abortion. Although abortion is legal in all 50 states, states have the ability to place restrictions on abortion, and many have done so. This is an up-to-date reference to those laws and how they are different. It is important to understand that abortion in the United States is different across state lines and many issues at stake now have to do with minors crossing state lines to have abortions, and the implication a reversal of Roe v. Wade would have for state legislation. This is easy to read and does not use a lot of legal jargon. It’s also easy to navigate and find exactly what you’re looking for.
Late Term Abortion Ban Act 2003
House of Representatives. Late Term Abortion Ban Act of 2003 (H.R. 679). 11 February 2003. 20 May 2008.
This is the biggest piece of legislation that has chipped away at Roe v. Wade, 30 years later. It prohibits abortion in the third trimester of a fetus that is viable—can live outside the womb of it’s mother. This banned what some called “partial-birth abortion” and a range of abortion procedures that were performed late term. It also asks state licensing facilities to take disciplinary action against physicians who break this law. This Act was signed by President George W. Bush and upheld by the Supreme Court. It represents a shift from Roe v. Wade that allowed for abortion at any stage. The bill provides the legal definitions of a “viable fetus,” an exception to the law, and refers to the fetus as an unborn child. It is easy to understand and rather short while still providing information of the law.

Roe v. Wade, U.S. Supreme Court
United States Supreme Court. Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113). 22 January 1973. 20 May 2008.
The most influential piece of law in relation to reproductive health and politics in the 20th century has been the Supreme Court’s decision to made abortion legal in all 50 states in all nine months of pregnancy. This decision outlines a woman’s right to privacy within her body and between her and her physician. The decision therefore is based on the right to privacy. Understanding the ruling behind the decision can help someone understand the possibility it may or may not be over turned and what would need to happen in order for that to happen. Although the brief is difficult to understand because of it’s legal jargon, the gist of the decision can still be understood.

Harris, Gardiner. "Drugs, Politics, and the F.D.A." 28 Aug. 2005. Rpt. in New York Times. Vol. 154. 2005. 1-14.
This article focuses on the abortion debate and the FDA’s delay in their decision on the over-the-counter morning after pill. It highlights the reactions to this announcement as well as the different political aspects involved. Harris further examines the debate for over-the-counter emergency contraception and the way politics has influenced the decisions of the FDA. The legalization and access to birth control as well as emergency contraception is imperative to the reproductive debate. This article also emphasizes the role politics play, even in the FDA, which should be scientifically and health based.

"Church Groups Turn to Sonogram to Turn Women from Abortions"
Banerjee, Neela. "Church Groups Turn to Sonogram to Turn Women from Abortions." 2 Feb. 2005. Rpt. in New York Times. Vol. 154. 2005. A1-A15
Banerjee discusses the impact of religion on reproductive rights, specifically related to abortion. The article talks about efforts to increase ultrasounds before a woman has an abortion. Critics of abortion rights believe women are not getting all the scientific information they need to make an educated decision. It also focuses on other efforts, like counseling, to reduce abortions and encourage women to carry their pregnancies full term. This is an interesting perspective that is very prevalent in the abortion debate and the influence of religious groups is very extensive. Although the article may be three years old, it is important today because many state legislatures are voting on laws requiring abortion providers to offer ultrasounds before abortions.

Jan, Tracy. "Protesters Decry Upholding of Ban on Abortion Procedure." The Boston Globe 29 Apr. 2007. Vol. 3. Boston: 2007. B4.
This article addresses the protests that followed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a ban on partial-birth abortion. In Boston, opponents of the decision gathered to fight the “slippery slope” toward a ban on all abortions. This article reflects the fear of those who are pro-choice that any ban on abortion could lead to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This article also mentions the Freedom of Choice Act that would sign the abortion decision in Roe v. Wade into law. These reactions are important to the political debate and the implications of decisions made regarding reproductive health, information a reporter should be aware of.

It has resources on diseases, data, organizations, and funding. It also has a page for the media and links to how campaigns and legislation affect women’s health. However it is important to note that it is a government page so it will not provide information criticizing legislation. Overall though, it does not present a biased view, mostly just facts and resources. This page includes information or links to sources for almost any issue within reproduction and politics
